One of the reasons the show pissed me off and why I told @sonyakitsune Derek and Stiles deserved better.

Clint sneaking out of medical had become enough of a habit that the medical staff tended to just send any prescriptions to his rooms, FAO Mr J. Barnes, as soon as he was mobile.
So the nurse just about jumped out of her skin when he cleared his throat and asked politely for some painkillers, please, while they both tried to ignore the shining tracks down his cheeks.
“But we -” she said, helpless, “we left the door open?” She gaped at him for a moment more, then bustled into action, taking his empty water jug to refill and going to fetch a doctor to issue more pills.
Clint scrubbed the hand that was currently working across his face, wishing the breath he took in wasn’t so goddamn shaky, and then tried to fish out the remote that’d make his bed lay him down again.
The bed started moving before he’d done more than brace himself to reach for the remote, settling into just the perfect angle, and he covered his face again ‘cos everything, everything goddamn hurt.
“Hey,” he croaked, and did his best to pat at the fingers that trailed gently over his cast-wrapped hand.
“Oh sweetheart,” Bucky said, and Clint choked on an idiot sob, curled as best as he could into the arms that Bucky wrapped around him as best as he could. Clint hid his face in Bucky’s hair and hitched in dumb breaths that hurt like hell and smelt like home, and Bucky whispered everything that he needed to hear.
“I’m sorry,” Clint said, “I’m sorry, I just – can we press pause for a bit? I swear, I swear we’re gonna talk about it, and I’ve probably got an apology to – but can I come home?”
Bucky reared back, startled, appalled, and cupped Clint’s face with a hand that was about as unsteady as Clint’s dumb voice.
“You’re a goddamn idiot,” he said, and pressed kisses to his forehead, the side of his face that wasn’t swollen, the stubbled skin just under his chin. “I don’t give a shit what we’re fightin’ about, Clint, I will never in my life not want you there.”

What if werewolves do scar, but it’s pretty rare. What if Derek feels so guilty about the fire that he doesn’t let himself heal from burns at first, when he’s still broken and suffering because of what happened to his family. Imagine Derek cooking and burning his hand and willing it not to heal. It doesn’t. It ends up scarring, which is new for Derek and he runs his fingers along the scars to remind himself what he’s capable of: healing and hurting and remaining unblemished and scarring – if he wants it enough. As time passes, he lets burns heals more, but there are still early ones. Scars on his hands from cooking, accidently hitting his hand on the hot metal of the oven. One on his leg from a piece of burning wood that came out of a bonfire. Stiles finds all these scars, intrigued: “I thought werewolves didn’t scar”, curiously pursuing it until Derek tells him in stilted and slightly ashamed words, that they’re badges of guilt. That they remind him of the people he’s lost. Stiles doesn’t know what to say, so he doesn’t comment, but he makes a point to kiss every scar. He lays his lips to the imperfections and thinks: “it’s ok”, “it’s not your fault”, “forgive yourself”, “I love you”.
Imagine though, Derek getting trapped or something, maybe there’s a cave in or hes kidnapped or the usual and what not. And he thinks he’s going to die so he records a video to say goodbye if it’s ever found.
And there’s a short message for Scott and Cora of course. But then there’s also a message for Stiles. Derek telling Stiles that he wished he had said it sooner, because now he’s pretty sure he’s never going to get the chance to tell Stiles how he loves him. How he has for awhile now, but he never said anything because he thinks Stiles deserves better than him.
But Derek wants Stiles to know, maybe just for posterity, maybe so Stiles knows, because Derek knows he sometimes thinks so low of himself, and maybe Derek isn’t the best person all the time but he thinks the world of Stiles, and thinks Stiles should know.
Of course, Derek gets found, and Stiles is the one to pick up his phone. He sees the message while Derek is recovering. He’s probably watched it a thousand times on repeat. He wants it played on his gravestone, tbh.
When Derek’s up and about again, Stiles gives him the phone back. Derek doesn’t say anything just sort of looks at him and Stiles can see he’s trying to figure out if Stiles found the video.
Stiles just slips the phone into Derek’s hand, curls his fingers around it but doesn’t let them go. He has things he prepared, practiced in front of the mirror that he wanted to say. There’s a half dozen crumpled up pieces of paper littering Stiles’ bedroom floor with words he didn’t think were good enough.
Instead though, Stiles doesn’t actually say anything, he just presses into Derek’s space and wraps his arms around him and holds on tight, buries his face in Derek’s neck and squeezes his eyes shut.
After a brief moment of surprise, Derek returns the gesture, holds Stiles close and tight. They stay that way for a long while, and when Stiles pulls back he only avoids Derek’s gaze for a moment before he turns and looks at him, sucks in a breath and tells him, earnest, “I love you too.”

I just ADORE this scene. Because it’s clear in almost every aspect of Stiles’ character that Stiles has always felt second in importance to the Sheriff’s job.
The job is not just what the Sheriff does, it’s who he is, and his role as Stiles’ father often seems to come second to that. So Stiles drives himself to school and puts himself to bed and makes sure his dad eats healthy and does all these other parentified things, and one of the lowest points in his life is when he costs the Sheriff his job.
The Sheriff telling Stiles that not only is he important, but that he’s MORE important than the job – than the whole STATION – that the straight-laced, rule-following Sheriff would burn the station to the ground and break every law to protect Stiles? That’s just amazing, and it was exactly what Stiles needed to hear more than anything just then.
What if home is a person who isn’t here anymore?
