“We can’t do this.”

Kira reaches out, takes Malia’s hand.  Her eyes are wide and imploring as she gives
the coyote’s hand a little reassuring squeeze.

“We can,” she says softly.

Malia looks away.  “There’s
no way we can win, Kira. It’s impossible. We should just admit defeat.”

“You, admitting
defeat? Malia, you are one of the strongest people I know. You’re stubborn. We can do this.”

Kira’s faith in her is heart warming.  It almost makes Malia hope, that maybe she’s
wrong, that maybe they can pull this off together and be victorious, but she
just doesn’t think they can do it.  They’re
going to be beaten, defeated, humiliated.

“We have to try,” Kira implores.

“Kira…”

“Oh my god,” Lydia’s voice cuts in. “You two are ridiculous.
Malia, can you just throw the ball already so we can go get food?”

Malia can’t help but break into a grin and Kira’s eyes light
up with laughter in response.  Malia turns
to where Lydia and Allison are cuddled up on one of the benches, Lydia now
looking incredibly bored, but Allison amused.
There’s the clatter of pins a few lanes over and some middle schoolers
cheer obnoxiously loud.

“We were having a moment,” Kira defends.

“Throw the ball,” Allison says, “Please? I’m starving.”

Malia picks up the bowling ball and throws it.  Just like most of her other throws, it rolls
straight into the gutter, and the game ends.
Allison and Lydia have completely and utterly kicked their asses and
Malia knows it’s on her; Kira’s amazing at bowling, but Malia’s the dead
weight.  It’s fun, but she just can’t
seem to get the hang of it, even with Kira helping her (though the wandering
hands and lips at her ear as Kira guided her through it had been more
distracting than anything).

“Finally,” Lydia says, getting to her feet. “I can’t even
celebrate our inevitable victory, I’m too hungry.”

“You don’t have to smack talk when we’ve already won, babe,”
Allison smiles, resting a hand on the curve of her hip as they walk.

Malia follows with Kira, feeling kind of dejected.  She’d really wanted to win, at least just to
see Kira smile.  

“I’m sorry,” she says. “I really suck.”

Kira slips her hand into Malia’s, leans close to kiss her
cheek. “I had fun,” she promises. “And we’ll beat them in the arcade, I
promise.”
