I have found a way for “we need to fake a relationship over the holidays” to work for Winterhawk.

See, Bucky’s been slowly trying to reconnect with the youngest of his sisters, Rebecca, who is now in her late 80′s and still sharp as a tack, healthy, and spry. He’s been talking to her in phone calls, and letters, and the occasional visits and Skype once he’d worked up the courage for it. Eventually she manages to talk him into visiting her and part of the extended family she has over Christmas/Hanukkah/both and he ropes Clint along ‘cause Clint is his best friend after Steve (and Steve is off with Sam) and he helps make Bucky more comfortable (plus – might as well bring Clint with since he doesn’t have a family – it’s the right thing to do). 

Now Bucky had talked a lot about the other Avengers – especially Clint. And Rebecca is Very Excited to open the door and greet her long lost brother – and “his lovely boyfriend that she’s heard so much about, honestly Jimmy why did it take so long for you to bring him over to meet me. It’s not like I’m going to embarrass you on purpose or anything.” Her smile spells trouble in a way that Bucky forgot he knew and in the middle of the shock of the statement itself and how chocked up her teasing makes him Clint steps in and smooths things over and mentions that it was his fault but he’d love to see any incriminating photos of young Jimmy and hear all the best stories.

Because obviously she’s an older lady and they shouldn’t crush her happy excitement just because she got a few things wrong in her assumptions so obviously they can pretend to be a couple for a week or so it’s all good.

And, you know, if the two of them already harbored secret feelings for the other that’s just going to make it easier to pretend (tho both dread the day it ends and they won’t have the excuse to snuggle and cuddle and kiss).
